Beneath The Surface

SESSION 5

HANDS ON

This activity can be used to teach your students that the position of their bodies and their own merits do not cause their prayers to be heard. Help them to understand that it is the condition of their hearts that matter. Have students stand inside a circle of chairs or cones.  (If you use chairs, make sure the seats are facing the outside of the circle to avoid injury.) Make sure the circle is large enough for all the students to lie down in it at the same time.  Begin the game by having students stand inside the circle, and then toss a balloon into the air.  Students must work together to keep the balloon in the air, inside the circle.  If the balloon goes outside the circle or touches the ground, the students must all kneel on their knees and play the next round from there.  Each time the balloon touches the ground or goes outside the circle, students must assume a new position.  The positions, in order, are: Standing, Kneeling on Knees, Sitting, Lying Down.

ILLUSTRATING THE POINT

Have one student sit in a chair at the front of the room.  Gather 7-10 other students and instruct them to yell simple commands at the other student that is seated in the chair.  For example, have one student yell to lift his/her left arm up and another student yelling at the same time to put his/her left arm down.  The more commands that are yelled at the same time, the better.  Needless to say, the student that is sitting down will get so frustrated that they do not know what to do. This illustrates that in our daily life, we have so many different influences affecting our lives that it is important that we learn to listen only to Jesus...  "The sheep know his voice."

I THOUGHT I HEARD YOU SAY

If we could all hear one another's prayers, God might be relieved of some of his burdens.

There come times when I have nothing more to tell God.  If I were to continue to pray in words, I would have to repeat what I have already said.  At such times it is wonderful to say to God, "May I be in Thy presence, Lord?  I have nothing more to say to Thee, but I do love to be in Thy presence."

Just pray for a tough hide and a tender heart.

God has editing rights over our prayers.  He will... edit them, correct them, bring them in line with His will and then hand them back to us to be resubmitted.
